The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
