Underwhelming The Software Giant's Results Knock More Than $70bn Off Market Value, Stoking Artificial Intelligence Hype Fears.

The tech firm's underwhelming quarterly results have erased over $70 billion from the value of the software and data giant established by Trump ally Larry Ellison, adding to growing fears of a overheated market in artificial intelligence stocks.

Sharp Share Price Fall Comes After Sales Shortfall

Stock in the company tumbled by eleven and a half percent overnight after it disclosed a disappointing 14 percent growth in revenues to $16bn in the latest quarter, while simultaneously disclosed plans to boost its AI spending by approximately $15bn.

The enterprise posted softer-than-forecast three-month sales for the quarter ending in November, with revenue growth at its key cloud computing business growing at a slower pace than forecast, at 34%.

Market Concerns Over Investment and Leverage

Investors were also let down by a more moderate sixty-eight percent growth in revenues from its infrastructure business.

Concurrently, investors were alarmed by the company's elevated projections for AI investment. It now expects capex to surge by forty percent to $50bn, with the lion's share of the increase aimed at constructing data centres.

This heavy investment strategy comes amid a increasing debt load, with Oracle's long-term debt having surged by 25% over the past year to reach $99.9 billion.

"Honestly, the earnings release was not catastrophic, but it served to validate fears around heavy AI spending, funded through debt, with an unclear timeline for revenue generation," said a market analyst.

Wider Market Repercussions and Industry Risks

Continued optimism about the promise of AI tech has driven a sharp rise in stock prices in the past year, but there has been a rising number of warnings from regulators and business leaders who argue equity prices could plummet if the market become let down by the progress or commercial uptake of AI solutions.

While Oracle has become an important tech player creating enterprise solutions for large firms worldwide and has in recent years found strength in cloud computing, there are increasing questions about how reliant companies are growing on circular funding within the artificial intelligence industry.

Oracle disclosed that its metric of revenue from customer contracts jumped by four hundred and forty percent over the past year. However, analysts were cautious when it emerged that these commitments were propelled by new commitments from major customers like Meta and Amazon.

"Although these are high-quality customers, it will not placate concerns that the tech sector's AI investments are self-referential, which makes the sector susceptible to a erosion of market faith," commented a market strategist.

"In summary, robust contract growth was not enough to calm fears about AI and the massive amount of capital expenditure needed by companies to construct AI infrastructure."

Broader Sell-Off in AI-Related Stocks

Other technology stocks subsequently fell in extended trading following the Oracle announcement. Key movers included:

  • Nvidia: Stock fell by 1.3%.
  • Alphabet (Google): Stock dropped by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the AI investor shares fell by 7.7 percent on Thursday.
